How one compact POWER+ pergola transformed an exposed poolside corner into a private, adaptable outdoor room.
A poolside space should work for more than the occasional perfect afternoon. It should offer shade when the sun is high, privacy when it is needed and enough comfort to make staying outside feel effortless.
For Peter’s garden in Anaheim, the answer was not to build something oversized. Instead, the family created a carefully defined poolside retreat using a 3m × 3m FlexPatio POWER+ Gen 2 motorised pergola.
The adjustable louvred roof was combined with three motorised roller blinds and a fixed privacy shutter wall. Integrated lighting and concealed drainage complete a space that feels protected without becoming disconnected from the garden.
The result is a compact outdoor sanctuary: open to the surroundings when conditions are comfortable, and more sheltered at the touch of a button when they change.
A compact footprint with a clear purpose
At 3m × 3m, the pergola creates a distinct lounge without dominating the wider garden. The square footprint is large enough for generous seating while keeping the swimming pool and surrounding planting visually open.
This same principle is particularly relevant to British gardens, where every metre often needs to work around existing doors, windows, downpipes, flower beds and access routes. A successful pergola begins with the position—not simply the largest structure that will fit.

Light when you want it, shelter when you need it
Unlike a fixed-roof gazebo, the motorised louvres allow the atmosphere beneath the pergola to change throughout the day. They can open to admit sunlight and encourage natural ventilation, angle to create shade, or close when greater overhead shelter is required.
When the louvres are closed, rainwater is directed into the integrated drainage channels and carried through the structure. The system remains visually restrained, allowing the engineering to perform quietly in the background.
For UK homeowners, this adjustability is often more useful than a permanently solid roof. It allows the garden to remain bright on softer days while providing greater control when the weather becomes less predictable.
Privacy without losing the garden
Peter’s configuration combines two different types of side protection. Three motorised roller blinds can be lowered independently, while the fixed shutter wall creates a stronger visual boundary behind the seating area.
This mixed approach avoids making the pergola feel permanently enclosed. The blinds remain open when the family wants a full connection to the pool and garden, then lower when shade, privacy or additional protection is preferred.
For terraced and semi-detached homes in Britain, the same arrangement can help address overlooked boundaries. A fixed privacy wall may suit the side facing a neighbour, while a retractable blind can preserve the main garden view.

Designed for the hours after sunset
The project was never intended to function only as a daytime shade structure. Integrated LED lighting gives the seating area a softer atmosphere after sunset, turning the pergola into a natural place for evening drinks, conversation or a quiet moment beside the water.
Built-in power access also makes it easier to introduce everyday comforts without covering the structure in extension leads. Depending on the intended use, compatible heaters or fans can be added after the relevant electrical and mounting requirements have been confirmed.
Strength that remains visually quiet
The POWER+ frame is manufactured from powder-coated 6063-T5 aluminium, with 100mm posts and an integrated motorised roof system. Its clean profile provides the architectural definition of a permanent outdoor room without the visual weight of a traditional extension.
The model has a published wind-resistance figure of up to 128km/h (approximately 80mph), subject to the pergola size, configuration, foundations and correct installation. More exposed, elevated or coastal locations may require a higher-specification structure such as the POWER+ PRO.
As with any permanent garden structure, the foundation is an essential part of the finished system. Existing paving should not automatically be assumed to provide a suitable fixing base; the material and depth beneath it should be checked before installation.
A louvred pergola provides controllable overhead shelter. Because it is an outdoor structure, wind-driven rain may still enter through open sides or gaps. Performance depends on site exposure, foundations, installation and correct operation.
